Why You Should Grab Old Doors from the Trash Pile

This past Saturday was bulk trash collection day in our neighborhood. Or, as I like to call it, shopping day! I’m always amazed by what people throw in their trash heap, like this screen that I turned into a fireplace screen!

Anyway, this weekend, I went shopping trash pile exploring and found some great stuff!

I am planning to build a table for my back porch, so I was thrilled to find these table legs:

Aren’t they great? Well, not yet, but with a good cleaning and sanding and a fresh coat of paint…they’ll be perfect!

My neighbor gave me the wine crates and paint buckets – the paint buckets will be perfect for storage in the shed (painted a bright color first!). The wine crates make great storage.

Then I found these (swoooooooon!):

Aren’t they pretty?!? I’m thinking that I’ll turn the solid door into a bench (or part of a bench, given its size). The screen door might find a new life as a screen door for our back door, but I haven’t measured it yet.

So, what if you find old doors in a trash pile? What should you do with them?

Here are some ideas (click on the italicized text to go to the project post):

Five ways to repurpose old doors – Great ideas, including storage, turning a regular door into a sliding, barn-style door, and more!

Turn old doors into a daybed – One of my favorite and most-viewed projects! It even landed me in This Old House Magazine! Don’t need a daybed? Just make half and turn an old door into a headboard!

Turn an old door into a memo board – I did this for the teachers’ lounge renovation, but it would work great in a mudroom, entry, or playroom!

How have you repurposed old doors in your home? I’d love to hear about your ideas or projects in the comments!

I love that the doors aren’t painted. 🙂

Thank you, Gail! I think I may take a page out of your book and make a bench out of one of them!
