Best All-Natural Way to Clean Grout

If you follow me on Instagram, you got to see me clean my bathroom (lucky you!). I needed to get our bathroom ready for selling our home. I needed to clean the grout on our ceramic tile floor, but didn’t want to use bleach or other harsh cleaners. I found the best, easiest, all-natural way to clean grout, using stuff I already had in my kitchen!

This is all you need:

You could use a toothbrush instead of, or in addition to, the scrub brush.

This could not be easier! Sprinkle baking soda on the grout lines (don’t worry about being precise about this). Then spray or pour vinegar over the baking soda. It will bubble up and make all kinds of good cleaning noises!

Then take the scrub brush or toothbrush and scrub the grout lines. You don’t need major muscles for the scrubbing; just a little pressure on the brush is all that’s needed. You can see the difference here:

And, instead of smelling like bleach and maybe taking the color out of your clothing during this project, you can smell like an Easter egg! Vinegar smells way better than bleach and is less harsh on your skin, nasal passages, clothing, and the floor.

The whole floor took me about three hours total.

It looks so much better! #buymyhouse

NOTE: A few people noted that the vinegar will etch the grout. I researched this issue, and found conflicting information. So, try this on a small area of your floor first and make sure it doesn’t negatively affect the grout before tackling the whole floor.

I learned that you can only use vinegar on tile if the grout is sealed. The man who put our tile floor down told us this. Hope this will help some folks.

Are you able to mix the baking soda and vinegar in the same spay container, and spray it on the grout in the shower?

No, don’t do that. The baking soda and vinegar react and create bubbles and gas and that’s what helps clean the grout. If you mix them before, it will bubble and fizz in the bottle, which will reduce the cleaning power plus will probably make a mess. Hope that helps!
