Giving Weight to Furniture

Normally, I am averse to gaining weight, but in this case, this poor table needed it. Let me show you how giving weight to furniture can transform a smaller piece into something beautiful (and size-appropriate for your space!).

I bought this table when I got my first apartment.

I love it – and it has appeared in many places throughout my home. It came with glass shelves.

It’s a cute little table, but it’s little and light. It’s good for a small space, but it needs some weight to it to hold its own in a bigger space.

I had some old cabinet fronts from our kitchen renovation (these were the messed up drawer fronts; the contractor let me keep them).  I covered them with some free burlap fabric I had gotten as a sample. I attached the fabric to the wood with staples (using my trusty dusty staple gun), but you could use velcro or glue if you wanted, instead.

Once I added it to the table, it transformed the look of the little-table-that-could into something with some heft.

Now the little table has a bit more presence, along with more texture and some color to boot.

You could do this for any table top or shelf. You don’t even have to have a cabinet door to do it; you could just use plywood, or the original shelf or tabletop. Go with what you have or find an inexpensive alternative. It’ll be covered with the fabric, so it need not be gorgeous.

I really like the changed look. Here it is before:

I’m off to find some pretty things to add to the table now.

Your table looks great Karen! The texture of the burlap is perfect with the metal and glass. Also, loving your wall display with color dishes and silver!
